Mark
Lockett gives one-to-one lessons in : -
Piano - classical repertoire, jazz (how to improvise) and popular music.
Percussion
- drums, Latin and gamelan. Music Theory. Composition.
He
has been teaching piano for about 30 years and has always encouraged his students
to be ‘complete’ musicians, learning to compose and improvise as well as have
a good level of musicianship (theory, transcription, aural skills). Mark has lectured
in world music since 1980 in Higher and Adult Education. Areas of particular interest
include gamelan, folkloric music of Brazil and Cuba, and free jazz of the 1960s.
In the piano lessons he gives for beginners the priorities are developping an
interesting and varied repertoire, the foundations of dexterity and technique,
the reflex between listening and playing, the ability to sight-read, understanding
key structures and the basics of harmony, how to accompany, and how to improvise.
